First, there is all this talk (and smell) of tar.
Then, you've got pipes breaking in the Valley.
And, it's the anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake (which was actually centered in Reseda, not Northridge).
Are you prepared? The Earthquake is coming... and it could be really soon. (All signs point to it, and the USGS has now predicted an earthquake along the San Andreas within the next 30 years!)
Some resources to prepare yourself:
-The City's Emergency Preparedness Department
-Sign up forCERT Training
-The US Geological Survey (home of Lucy Jones)

Not to be a kill-joy, but
1) the pipes are freezing because it IS freezing
2) In the next 30 years? How about this: A tornado touched down in downtown LA where Staples Center now sits. It happened in the past 30 years. Maybe we should all dig basements so we can be prepared for the tornado.
OK, OK, it IS a good idea to be prepared for disaster (speaking of tar...remember the movie "Volcano"?

I've been smelling tar a lot lately in a lot of different places besides Mid Wilshire (Adams Blvd. & 110 last night for one).
I'm wondering if that's an indication of a San Andreas buildup or one of those other "previously unknown" faults that jut around the area.
I'm thinking maybe I'll lay in some extra supplies this week ... can't hurt.
Pam - besides basements, tornado prep is the same as earthquake prep (supplies, stay away from windows, emergency contact plans, etc.).
In San Francisco a few weekends ago, they had 3 almost identical quakes on the same fault line in two days. The newscasters reporting on the quakes were visibly nervous. All's I'm saying is that I'm stocking up on water and supplies and I keep meaning to figure what behemoth size batteries my giant flashlight takes. One this is for sure: at some point there will be an earthquake and if it's anytime soon, our federal government is not equipped to help. Be prepared.
