Another new community?

As reported here back in November, the movement to rename the Westlake/McArthur Park district of Los Angeles in honor of the now predominantly Central American community that calls that section of the city home has resurfaced again. The LA Times has an article about it here.

If it goes through, we'll have to update the list of designated communities. What a loss, though, to eliminate Westlake with the theatre sign so proudly heralding the truly historic name to passersby.

I don't know. I think that, unlike East Hollywood/Thai Town or whatever title Historic Phillipinotown was before, Westlake is a historically significant NAME for its neighborhood.

Nothing against recognizing the diverse population that has transformed McCarthur Park, but some neighborhood names should transcend over ethnicities.

If the process was followed and there were enough supporters, would the city allow an area to be renamed "Caucasian Town?"

"Caucasian Town" would be designating a race. It would have to be designating a nationality, such as "Little Italy", "Irish Town"/"Cork Town", "Greek Town", "Pole Town"/"Polish Hill" and "Little Portugal" to name a few. As for "historical Central American Town"? I prefer West Lake myself. I don't even like the name Macarthur Park. I prefer it's original name of West Lake Park. The good General never even visited the park anyway, it was simply changed in the 50s when he was considering run for the Presidency. = )
