The Seven Tunnels of LA!

Here they are... the "Seven Tunnels of Los Angeles" (our version of Rome's Seven Hills):

The Sepulveda tunnel under Mulholland in Encino

The Cesar Chavez tunnel under the railroad tracks next to Union Station

The Sepulveda tunnel underneath LAX

The Sherman Way tunnel underneath Van Nuys Airport

The 3rd Street tunnel underneath Bunker Hill

The 2nd Street tunnel underneath Bunker Hill

The Mount Hollywood Drive tunnel underneath the Berlin Forest in Griffith Park

Way to go to Peter McFerrin, the Transportation Policy, Planning & Development Nerd, for listing them all.

The Chavez underpass probably doesn't really count as a true tunnel; by all surface indications, it's just a very wide rail bridge. Thomas Bros. shows it as a tunnel, though, so a tunnel it is!

In this City, it's a tunnel.

Read the last post -- if it's controlled by CalTrans, City Nerd wants nothing to do with it.

Love the fact that I get to travel through 3 tunnels, the above referenced Figueroa tunnels, on the way home to beautiful Montecito Heights from Hollywood.

Great list Nerd!

Yeah, that Chavez underpass hardly counts if you ask me.

Outside of the city limits (yes, I know you're specifying inside), there are the tunnels on Kanan-Dume (not Malibu Canyon). In Long Beach, there are tunnels on both Spring Street and Lakewood Blvd. under the LGB runway. Plus the McClure Santa Monica. And if the Chavez underpass counts, then the 210 under Angeles Crest Highway in La Canada Flintridge counts, too. Plus the ramp to stay on the 210 E in Pasadena where it meets up with the 134.

Isn't there like a little tunnel (or is it an overpass?) on Silverlake under Sunset?

There's the tunnel leading into the Hollywood Dell neighborhood off Cahuenga. I believe the street is either Dix or Holly.

I'll rubberstamp Ryan's vote for the Malibu Canyon tunnel. And the tunnel leading to the Hollywood Dell 'hood is indeed via Holly Drive.

There used to be a tunnel from the intersection of Glendale and 2nd street to the Downtown area built by Pacific Electric in the 20's. It's closed off now and not continuous due to subsequent construction but it should certainly be counted. Huell Howser did a show on it several years ago and if you google Pacific Electric tunnel Los Angeles you'll find lots of references to it. Here's a link to a photo of the entrance taken from what would be the intersection of Glendale Blvd and 2nd Street: http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics14/00006943.jpg
